Pampering and replenishing

I'm back home after a few weeks away. I decided that what I could really do with now is a good pamper: epilation and, above all, painting my nails.

My fingernails that I complained had broken a while back were almost back to their ideal length... and then this morning another broke. Aargh! It's the middle finger that's usually the failure point on either hand, maybe because it sticks out further than the others and catches on things more. Or maybe it's just weaker. Nails are a good indicator of dietary health, weaknesses often indicating a lack of minerals or vitamins, but I have a good diet so I doubt it's that.

I prefer to grow my own nails rather than use stick-on nails. But I have only ever worn nail varnish in pinks and reds and maybe it's time to be more varied and increase my dwindling stock, so I'm looking for a set of varnishes in different colours just for a change. Purple and black, definitely. Maybe blue. A Christmas gift to myself, perhaps?

Nice but too little variety ... and too few pots. You can't have too many varnishes!

Looking at my now nearly zero stock of lipstick, I think the same rule applies.

I keep being screamed at from every angle about how Black Friday is coming and how I must grab those bargains, but invariably the stuff on sale is usually rubbish that retailers have found hard to shift. Don't be fooled by the propaganda - in the last 30 years, the shop sales have largely been a junkyard sale. However, I'll doubtless do my usual trip out to see what's available, especially in perfumes, another favourite self-gift.

It's also time for warmer clothes. Last week when I was away there was a hailstorm - a rare event here - that punched holes in my cactuses! And on Thursday the daytime temperature here dropped to below 10C (50F), there was a waterspout offshore and snow dusted the high ground. On the riviera this is taken as a clear sign of the impending apocalypse and everyone who went out and braved the wrath of the gods was wrapped in their skiwear. Fortunately, things have gone back to a healthier 16C and I have been able to eat outdoors in the sun again. Many thanks to that dear trans friend who sent me a picture of her sitting on an iceberg in Greenland during a recent cruise, plus details of how she's planned a trip to Norway in January, but I'll stick to warmer climes for my holidays, thanks! That said, the cardigans are out, and the thicker tights and the boots. Summer frocks are lovely but there's something to be said for winter elegance.

I haven't succumbed to putting the central heating on yet this year but that may be just a matter of days. Still, it's a contrast with my life in Britain where I always had the heating prepared for switch-on any time in September. I don't do cold!

So thinking towards Christmas ... since I've never had family or partners buy me any girl gifts, although occasionally female or trans friends have done (thank you!), I've usually given myself a little something. In the early days it was lingerie, then hosiery and after that perfume. It looks like it'll be colourful new lips and nails this year.

  1. Xmas can be an awkward time for transfolk, especially those who are alone, closeted or have unsympathetic, non-accepting or even downright bigoted partners or family.
"Ooh, more socks", when what you really wanted to be inside that wrapping paper was several pairs of Charnos 15 den semi gloss stackings. We don't so much want stocking fillers was to *be* the stocking fillers at Xmas.
And don't get me started on Xmas parties and gathering when we spend most of our time enviously watching the women and girls in their sparkly dresses and tops and wishing we could be with them rather than feeling out of place talking about jobs and football with the men. 'Tis the season when imposter syndrome really hits home.
So don't hold back on those little self treats like lippie or nail polish or maybe those earrings you've been eying since the middle of the year.

    1. Thank you, Susie. Yes, the Christmas season can be quite a strain on the dysphoriometer (an inbuilt device a bit like the Grattan's catalogue in a pressure cooker). I shall temper the strain with a few choice purchases. Sue xx

  2. I hope you get yourself some lovely nail colours and some nice perfume to indulge yourself with at Christmas.
I'm glad to hear that the Riviera weather is returning to normal after it's temporary malfunction.
The best thing about Autumn is the fashions and the excuse to wear boots.

    1. Thank you, Dee. I am on a colour quest ...

Ah, yes, boots. I have a lifelong love of knee-high boots. A short girl like me shouldn't wear such, except with tight jeans or leggings in the same colour, but sometimes you've just got to choose what you love, not what's right.

  3. You can´t have too much nail polish. I have really a lot but most of the time I return to violet/purple.....and I too, like to have my own nails. I don´t like the feeling of the glued nails. Mostly they are too long (and you hardly can put on nylontights without risking a beautiful run). I am lucky that my nails don´t break easily.
I wish you a wonderful time and maybe you Santa will bring you wonderful nail-polish LOL.
Have a good time dear Sue

    1. I forgot something: As I read the title of your post I did not know what pampering meens. I had to consult a translator app. Now I know that it has a pleasant meaning. But it first reminded me of the Pampers nappies. And the german meaning of pampering (pempern) is colloquial to have sex.....LOL

    2. Thank you, dear Violetta. I'll let you know what colours I get.

I am sure Pampers nappies are called that because they are soft and pamper your baby's bottom! I am a professional linguist, as you probably already know, so thank you for the information about "pampern" in German. These things are always interesting and sometimes you have to be careful: the Rolls-Royce model called the Silver Mist did not sell well in German-speaking countries!

  4. Hi Sue,

It sounds like you’ve had quite the whirlwind of a few weeks! I love how you’re treating yourself, epilation, nails, lipstick… a proper pamper session is always deserved. Totally relate to the heartbreak of a broken nail, hate it so much.

I love the idea of branching out with new nail colours. Purple, black, and blue sound perfect, definitely a fun way to refresh your collection. And yes, you can never have too many varnishes (or lipsticks)! Treating yourself to a little pre-Christmas self-gifting sounds very on-brand and well-earned.

Wow, your weather updates made me shiver just reading them! Hail punching holes in cactuses, a waterspout, and snow dusting the high ground… Riviera apocalypse vibes indeed. Good call sticking to warmer climes for holidays, your trans friend’s iceberg adventures sound impressive but maybe not as cosy.

Winter elegance suits you, though, cardigans, tights, boots, and enjoying the sun when it shows up. And the central heating debate, oh yes, the battle of tolerating cold! I sympathise completely; nothing worse than being caught unprepared.

Your Christmas self-gifting ritual sounds wonderful, and colourful lips and nails this year sound like the perfect treat. You’ve earned it!

    1. Aw, thank you so much, Lotte. Now I can buy myself that feminine gift with a clear conscience. I'll let you know what I get myself. Actually, I think I need new ankle boots, too ...

    2. Or some boots like those in my Depeche Mode outfit idea perhaps?

    3. Ah yes, I might well do that. I had two pairs of patent boots, one knee-length that were real favourites, one over the knee that I wore occasionally to Pink Punters and places. But faux leather doesn't last and I miss them. Let's see what's online ... Sue xx
