Wiggy thoughts

Hair is massively important. Sure, it protects the head from the sun, but socially it indicates so much. "I am a woman" or "I am a man" is usually the first item on the hair agenda.

The issue of hair is especially important to us trans women, MtF crossdressers, etc. I came to a realisation recently: that all but two of the many trans women I know who have transitioned had their own hair, not wigs. It has to be a serious consideration that if you transition with little or no hair you will (almost certainly) be wearing a wig every day for the rest of your life, and that's a huge outlay over time. Maybe I just happen to know hairy transitioners so it's just coincidence ... or maybe not.

I really need new hair. By which I mean new wigs. Real hair would be nice but nature forbids. Or rather, nature has given me lots of hair but only where it's no use, rather than on top where it would be ideal. Maybe it's possible to make a wig out of excess bottom hair. The downside is that it might keep blowing off! (An old joke, probably from some student mag.)

Sigh. If only nature would co-operate. But then nature could really do with giving me a whole body morph, in which case the hair is just a detail.

I have some wigs that somehow keep working despite being very old. But I must make an appointment with a wig specialist soon to get new ones and look into new styles as I think I need to start considering looks for older ladies.

My go-to style that I think suits me very very well is the Noriko "Carrie" range, especially in colours like cappuccino and coffee latte. (I no longer drink coffee but evidently my hair loves it!) I like its length, its body and the easy-going flicks and curls that can be rearranged, though it's sometimes hard to keep everything in place, especially if there's a bit of wind. Yes, I do sometimes add a little spray, but too much of that and you eventually end up with a rigid helmet of hair that takes ages to wash, plump and restyle.

And a more recent one:

Tidier cappuccino:

I have bought some cheap wigs over the years purely to experiment with new styles. There's no point buying something costly to start with that then doesn't work so well. I appreciate opinions on this blog, but they've tended to come back negative on these looks so far. I do actually like the silver style I play at witches with and maybe transforming into a silver-haired older lady might be on the cards?

Obviously, this is a cheap joke shop wig that sheds nylon everywhere and is probably too long but the colour might work in real life, and I like the bangs, too. It certainly would catch attention. As ever, readers' opinions invited.

Sadly, Noriko doesn't have physical outlets in Italy so I hope to visit a specialist when I am next in London in July. I used to visit Trendco in Kensington a lot when I lived in England and I really valued their honest advice and unhurried assistance. They now seem to be the London Hair Clinic behind Oxford Street so I'll try them for new advice and fitting. I notice they have my usual styles and colours in stock.

Trips

I'm trying to have a few days away every month this year, to make up for last year's cancellations due to care duties, and because I'm finding my explorations are proving fascinating. Next week I'll be in Provence again as I loved my trip there in February. This time I'll be in Fréjus. The location caught my eye in the travel guide as it was a Roman port where Cleopatra's fleet was moored after the Romans had captured it.

I hope it'll provide some interesting material, preferably trans or at least LGBT related. One of the local products is asses' milk soap and Cleo is famously said to have bathed in it, so there's that on my shopping list...

Anyway, here's some entertainment for your weekend with the original trailer for Carry on Cleo. Watch out for her poisonous asp! :-D

  1. Dear Sue, fist: thanks for your ever so kind visits to my blog. Yes I know food is much better in Italy than in England. So we travel to Italy in June...with my wife and I hope to take Violetta out one or two times. Let´s see. I think your whigs fit you ecpecially the latte one. And don´t care about age...hope you are not intending to buy a grey one. But on the other hand...grey can look also very good if everything else is in tune (hope that is the right expression). I think the length of your whigs are alright for you.
Have a good time and all the best

    1. Thanks for your helpful comments, Violetta. I really appreciate your opinion and for letting me know what you think about my hair.

Your blog is a beautiful and positive place on the internet when the world is full of violent, ugly men. I love reading about your adventures and I can see how many other people visit regularly as well.

Where are you going in Italy? Somewhere nice, I'm sure.

    2. Sorry dear Sue...I did not visit your blog for days. We are going near Orvieto and the second desitnation near Rimini. Friends were in the surroundings and were enthusiastic about some places there (but surely not Rimini LOL).
      Hugs Violetta

    3. OK, those places are a very long way from me. But the country around Orvieto is very beautiful and the towns in the area are fascinating and attractive. The Rimini area is totally different. But Italy is a land of contrasts. Have a wonderful time and I'm sure I'll read about your holiday on your blog when you are back. Sue xx

  2. Crikey, Cleo was filmed in 64? Wow, I remember so many repeats of that into the late 80s.

The right 'do certainly helps, yes. As a former colleague said: "it's a hat you wear everyday". She also added that if her hair was looking good, it helped her feel good. I think that's something I'd agree with, even if mine is a wig.

As to going silver or grey, that's certainly a look her for ladies our age since COVID. Maybe it's like Colour Theory, in that there's the right brown or silver for everyone - you just need the shade that works best for you.

    1. Thanks, Lynn. I definitely need a consultation rather than just plumping for something different. I took a few tries to get the style just right as it is.

"A hat you wear every day." Yes, and I'm in no doubt that if it's a good hair day you feel good, too. A new syrup does that for me, I know.

    2. Well, Chams had Wigeroo visit last time. What do you think about a video call to them about styles?

Nik was saying she could order items and gain a discount.

That or maybe a visit if you're in the Midlands at some point

    3. Thanks again, Lynn. I noticed their online consultation service through the link you posted on your blog. I'll certainly give it a thought, or indeed visit them, if my consultation in London doesn't work out. I may be in your area in the autumn. Sue xx

  3. I probably have too many cheap wigs that I've picked up over the years that are only for indoors. I wish I had kept the details for my go-to brown bob wig so that I could find another similar one as it's starting to get a bit ratty at the ends.

    1. I know what you mean, Susie. I have kept all the labels from my wigs but haven't made a proper system for matching each wig back to its label, so sometimes I am guessing. As for "joke shop" stuff, that's purely for home use, either for cosplay or when I want to see if a style will work. Usually it doesn't so at least few pennies are lost. Sue xx

    2. Found it, tucked away on an inner label. 'AnnabellesWigs'. Now I just need to work out which model it was.

    3. I think I have an Annabelles Wig, or I certainly did have. They are surprisingly good quality for the price. I notice their old-fashioned style website is still going but I suppose that's consistent with their previous era styles. Sue xx

  4. I love my wigs and even if I transitioned, I would wear them, despite be folically blessed. Not that I would transition. I have 3 Noriko wigs, my current blonde wig (Sky), my rather bouffant golden brown one (Mariah), and the cappuccino short bob (Cory) that I wore when I met you at Kew back in 2011. I was given that by Chrissie, who bought it but never wore it. I like Noriko wigs. They are always well made..I hope you have a wonderful trip to Province. I'm delighted that you're Cleopatra reference was Amanda Barrie rather than Elizabeth Taylor.

    1. Thanks, Dee.

I was brought up on Carry On and the like (you can tell!) and I'm convinced Carry On Cleo was the best of them, perhaps because they got to use the sets and costumes from the Liz Taylor epic flop. As well as the wealth of corny gags in it, naturally!

I'll be posting about Provence tomorrow.

I agree about Noriko; I've never had any problems with them apart from that they get old and harder to shape and wash as time goes by.
